BC Rail used to be our provincial railway, a crown corporation that existed from 1912-2004, when it was leased to CN rail for 999 years. That was a political clusterfuck that I won’t get into, but it’s always odd to see one of their locomotives running around that hasn’t been repainted in CN livery. This one is especially odd, because it’s a GE Dash 8-40CM. It’s a fully cowled Dash 8, made only for Canada, and mostly for the BCR. They ordered 26, something to do with less snow building up but I’m not really sure. What I do know is that no one likes running them very much because you can’t see behind you very well at all. Anyways, here’s another 40CM, and a more common 40CW for comparison.

Edit* I just double checked, and CN ordered 55 of them as well, so they weren’t mostly for the BCR

Canadian National. I also love Metra and Norfolk Southern.

I miss the days when Wisconsin Central trains used to thunder into Chicago...the last remnants of them I see is CN using WC rolling stock.

“What I do know is that no one likes running them very much because you can’t see behind you very well at all.”

Is this an issue in Canada? A train driver normally has no rear visibility whatever except for CCTV.

I’m not sure, my best guess is that they go by hand signals when hitching cars or something, and that would be way easier without the full cowl.

Something like this (Vossloh loco)?

Kinja'd!!!

There’s always somebody guiding the driver when coupling.

CN’s logo is my favourite. I used to dream of being an Engineer for them, no small part because of the logo and livery

That is a strange looking thing. I know, I’m just guessing. I’ve read a couple places that crews disliked them for rear visibility reasons, but I’m not sure what reasons those are. It could be because of the cold. They’d have to open the window and hang their head out to be guided back, but with the rear-facing windows of the other locos, they can stay warm inside
